New Yorkers have a nice gem here to get away from people. When visiting in the spring, we had only passed one group while walking a few mile stretch in the wilderness area, teenagers who were hanging out the right way like in years past. A small speaker music player, beach towels, and good company away from it all are the ingredients for hanging out.

Clothing-optional beaches with boardwalk roads leading to various sections. Take the ferry to get to the island. Fun night-time events. There aren't food/water vendors on the beach so bring things or buy it by the ferry stop. Worthwhile to consider renting a room on the island or near the ferry.

Beautiful beach that's always clean. Has a small beach side outdoor restaurant with pretty good food that's decently priced given the location. There's live music and it's a very lively and child friendly atmosphere.

Also, the seashore is a dynamic, changing place, which is quite interesting. Don't trust Google Maps totally, here. The "Old Inlet" is no longer there. We looked for it, but Hurricane Sandy's power (and human efforts since) changed the seashore such that it is only sand now.

I would highly recommend bike riding into the communities if possible. It will transport you to another world.

This seashore was a wonderful escape from visiting the hustle and bustle of NYC. We loved NYC, no doubt, but a vacation should include some relaxation time in nature as well as the huge amount of cultural stimulation that the city provides. We opted to visit the stretch near the wilderness visitor center by the Smith County Park.

The wilderness sections of this barrier island seashore are quite wild, and one can feel a bit like being in remote backcountry stretch of beach. Well, just don't walk to the top of the sand and look towards Long Island, anyway, since residential areas still line the shores of Long Island the entire length of the National Seashore.

Love going here off season for some fishing or just to enjoy the quiet beach. Love it even more with a fatbike. Strapped up a surf rod and rode from Moses to Ocean Beach recently. Less homes would make it even better!
